Spurs fans troll Shai-Gilgeous Alexander with ‘flopper’ chants as officiating discourse grows

“Flopper! Flopper! Flopper!”

The chants poured down from San Antonio Spurs fans midway through the third quarter Friday night at Frost Bank Center, moments after Oklahoma City Thunder star Gilgeous-Alexander drew another foul during Game 3 of the Western Conference finals.

By then, San Antonio’s frustration with Gilgeous-Alexander’s foul merchantry, and what Spurs fans believe has been a favorable whistle for the defending champions throughout the series, had already turned into one of the game’s defining storylines.

One Spurs fan arrived wrapped in bubble wrap with a blue No. 2 taped to his chest, then flailed around in a video posted to X, mocking what Spurs fans view as Gilgeous-Alexander’s tendency to exaggerate contact in search of calls.

That frustration extended beyond Gilgeous-Alexander. Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein received “you pull hair” chants during pregame warmups after grabbing Spurs guard Stephon Castle’s long dreadlocks in Game 2, snapping the second-year guard’s head backward. Hartenstein was not whistled for a foul on the play.

The Thunder big man was immediately booed after scoring Oklahoma City’s first basket of the game, a push shot that came with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter and stopped a 15-0 opening run by San Antonio.

It should be noted that entering Friday night, the Spurs had actually attempted more free throws than the Thunder in the series, 46 to 43.

The series’ two headliners, Wembanyama and Gilgeous-Alexander, had also attempted the exact same number of free throws through the first two games with 15 apiece. During the playoffs, San Antonio ranked sixth in free-throw attempts per game, while Oklahoma City ranked 14th out of 16 postseason teams.

The defending champion Thunder entered the Western Conference finals riding an eight-game playoff winning streak after sweeping both the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers. That run ended in Game 1, when San Antonio walked into Oklahoma City and left with a 122-115 double-overtime victory.

The Thunder responded in Game 2, evening the series with a 122-113 win.

Both teams entered Friday night chasing the pivotal Game 3 victory, and a 2-1 series lead with a trip to the NBA Finals hanging in the balance.
